Doug is now on a medical mission to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia under the
auspices of the INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEERS IN UROLOGY. (IVU) This
volunteer group hopes to developing strong, ongoing ties with most of
the hospitals in this beautiful capitol city located at the edge of the
Gobi desert. IVU's goals include the provision of medical education,
modernization of the healthcare methodologies, donations of desperately
needed equipment and supplies and perhaps in the future, faculty-student
exchange programs and collaborative research. Dr. Wayne Kuang, senior
resident at the Cleveland Clinic, will join Doug in 3 days, 9/11. Dr.
Kuang will introduce to this country's 12 urologists a technique to
remove kidney stones with only a small incision, minimal suffering and
rapid recovery. Needless to say, the urologists here are most excited
for this teaching. Doug, in just 3 days, has made Grand Rounds,
performed 8 major operations and arranged meetings with many potential
donors in Mongolia for this effort to modernize the delivery of
healthcare. Below is a statue of Vladimir Lenin which stands tall just
in front of the Ulaanbaatar Hotel, a reminder of the grim days under the
grip of the Soviet Union and an urgent call to deal with its ugly legacy.
